Why Clarity Comes Before the How

By Susanna Kenyon-Muir

Here's what I see constantly:

People rush to the "how" too fast.

They ask:

  • How do I lift and shift what is, or was, my 9-5 to an external income source? And quickly!
  • How do I create my first income stream?
  • How do I get clients?
  • Should I do coaching? Consulting? A course? Advisory/NED work? What will people think?
  • What if I'm too late?
  • What about the lifestyle I've built up over the last few decades? Or the mortgage and kids I have to pay for?

Whilst these are all valid and important, it's important to be clear on what and why first.

Like getting into a car and turning your GPS on - you want to know WHERE you are driving before you start driving.

Same thing in your portfolio career.

Similar perhaps to when you started all those years ago, when you left high school and went to university and then started working.

You may not, or probably didn't, have known what you wanted to do at the end of the road, but you started. You had an inkling, and you BEGAN.

Fast forward, you're at a stage in your life now where that corporate career that you embarked on, and gave you a lot (experiences in corporate life, lots of travel, a house, family and maybe more), let's be honest, just isn't cutting it anymore.

It's not fulfilling, and so here you are wondering "what's next"?

This is why it's so important to get super clear on what your path is by embarking on a journey of self-development before you start going a million miles an hour, executing in the wrong direction.

So why Clarity?

Clarity supports you in making a few powerful decisions:

  • What you actually want (not your spouse, family or friends)
  • What matters to you now (not five years ago)
  • What you're building towards - with intention
  • And what you are no longer willing to tolerate - why would you put up with managers that don't support you, a toxic work environment or work that doesn't energise you

Your portfolio career isn't just multiple income streams.

It's a life designed on purpose.
